St. Benedict, a man of God (480-?)

St. Benedict was born in Norcia, northeast of Rome, Italy around 480. Feeling called while his study in Rome, he left everything behind and eventually made his way to Subiaco where he lived in solitude in a cave for 3 years. Known as a wise and holy man and gathered by many followers he established a new monastery. He later moved to Monte Cassino where he built another monastery. It was here that he wrote his Rule and he died around 547.

The Rule of St. Benedict became the cornerstone of the western monasticism with its adaptability and moderation, dealing with spiritual principals and precepts. Transcending the ages, it has inspired numerous monks to this day. Pursuing the balance with Opus Dei (liturgy of the hours or the work of God), Lectio Divina (divine or holy reading), and labors, his teaching, Ora, Lege et Labora (Prayer, read, labor) leads us to seek for God in everything.
